Bookshop Day 2016

8 October 2016

Any time is a good time to visit your local bookshop but this week is particularly good as the Booksellers Association campaign #onlyonthehighstreet kicks off from Monday 3 October celebrating our high street bookshops.

It's part of the BOOKS ARE MY BAG (BAMB) nationwide campaign to celebrate bookshops. This collaboration between publishers, bookshops and authors is the biggest ever promotion of bookshops. For many people bookshops conjure fond images of book readings, in-store cafes and delight at the discovery of a new author. And in fact 56% of all book buying decisions are made by consumers in a bookshop, but we must continue to celebrate - and shop in! - our high street bookshops so they are not under threat.

Why Buy Books in Your Local Bookshop?

  • You love books
  • You may be about to make a purchase you'll value for the rest of your life
  • You'll be shopping on your local high street
  • You'll be helping create local jobs
  • You might just find a book you never knew existed
  • You'll find great gifts for friends and family
  • You can talk to real people about books they know and love
  • You'll be part of your local book-loving community

These are just some of the elements that add up to the real book-buying experience.

The Books Are My Bag Readers Award

BAMB 2016 officially launches on Thursday 6 October when the first-ever Books Are My Bag Readers Awards shortlist will also be announced! Created by bookshops, chosen by book-lovers, the Books Are My Bag Readers Awards are a unique new set of awards. They are the only Book Awards with shortlists curated by High Street booksellers. And the only awards voted for by their book-loving customers. Five shortlists have been chosen by booksellers:

  • Fiction
  • Non-Fiction
  • Biography & Autobiography
  • Children's and
  • Breakthrough Author.

The fact that these shortlists have been chosen exclusively by booksellers means that they occupy a unique place among awards.

See the BAMB website for more information.
