Scottish Parliament Book Trade Reception

19 April 2017

Scottish publishers, booksellers, MSPs and other guests gathered in the Scottish Parliament Members' Room on 19 April 2017 for a showcase of Scotland's book trade.

The busy event - sponsored by Joan McAlpine MSP - highlighted the literary, educational and business highlights of the industry.

Unfortunately at the last minute Joan McAlpine was unable to attend the event, so Stewart Stevenson MSP kindly stepped up to the podium and provided everyone with a warm welcome to the event.

In her speech Publishing Scotland Chief Executive Marion Sinclair outlined the contribution that books make to culture, education and social outcomes; celebrated the role of the author, publisher and the public funding of literature; and concluded with a plea for increased support of the creative industries from Government. Chair of the Booksellers Association Rosamund de la Hey highlighted encouraging high street sales, structural pressures on the industry, and the power and importance of bookshops as cultural hubs. There were also speeches from James Crawford, Chair of Publishing Scotland; Katy Lockwood-Holmes, Publisher and Chief Executive of Scottish Publisher of the Year Floris Books; and Meryl Halls, Head of Membership Services at the Booksellers Association.

All Publishing Scotland members were invited to display their books at the event. A total of 27 took up the offer and put on a fantastic display that really emphasised the diverse and creative nature of the industry. As well as browsing the stands there were plenty of opportunities for networking between publishers, booksellers and other industry representatives.
