Publishing Scotland and the Edinburgh International Book
The Edinburgh International Book Festival is the largest and
most dynamic festival of its kind in the world. In addition to
hundreds of author events, it runs two independent bookshops during
the Festival: one for adults and one for children.
Publishing Scotland has been closely involved with the Festival
from its inception in 1983 (even sharing office space for a few
years) and we and our members take part in three ways:
- We offer our publisher members shelf space in the Festival
- We organise an event for the Festival's main programme
- We host a reception for members at the Festival.
Shelf space and bookshops
The footfall at EIBF is large so this is an excellent
opportunity to display and sell titles to a book-loving audience.
Publishing Scotland negotiates discounted rates for sales space in
the bookshops and passes them on to our members. We also organise
the member bookings and liaise with the Bookshops Manager on the
layout of our area. During the Festival we make daily visits to the
bookshops to help the booksellers ensure that the display is
stocked and tidy. It's also a great opportunity to meet our
publishers and their authors and readers as Charlotte Square is the
centre of the book world at that time of year.
Publishing Scotland's event in the EIBF programme
Every year Publishing Scotland is proud to host an event in the
official Festival programme. In deciding on a topic and speakers,
we consider current issues and trends in publishing and are
informed by our members and those we work with. We then pitch it to
the Festival's programme director. In previous years we have
hosted events on 'How to get published' and the 'Future of
publishing'. The 2012 event was Judging a Book by its
Cover with jacket designers Jamie
Keenan and Jon Gray.
Summer reception at the EIBF
As EIBF is undoubtedly a highlight of the publishing year,
Publishing Scotland holds an annual reception there for members and
other guests. Sometimes the event is jointly hosted with another
related organisation, as in 2012 when the joint hosts were the
Edinburgh World Writers Conference.
