The network for trade,
training and development

22 February 2017

Speaker: Kevin Ramage

Kevin joined the book trade as Membership Executive at the Booksellers Association. In 1995, he became a bookseller, buying the Owl Bookshop and the Truro Bookshop and then the Grove Bookshop in Ilkley.

When the last two of their four sons went to university, Kevin and his wife Jayne moved to Aberfeldy on the edge of the Scottish Highlands. Looking at the idea of 'bookshop and coffee shop' - especially in a rural area - they ended up buying a 4,500 sq ft grade 1 listed former oatmeal mill and turning it into a 'three ring circus' - bookshop, art gallery and coffee shop, to which they later added interiors shop Homer. The Watermill was opened by Michael Palin in May 2005. In 2008 it was awarded Best Independent Bookshop in the UK and in 2016 included as one of 75 bookshops worldwide in a USA-published collection of 'World's Greatest Bookshops'.
