The network for trade,
training and development

11 December 2017

Speaker: Sally Pattle

After graduating from St Andrews University I enjoyed several careers before falling into bookselling. Whilst studying for a Masters in Publishing at Napier University I started working part-time for Birlinn Ltd as well as part-time in my mother's bookshop in Linlithgow, Far From The Madding Crowd. In 2015, Jill Pattle - my mother - decided to take a step back from the business, so I made the decision to leave the Birlinn basement in Newington to take over the running of the shop full time. Which I do mainly from the basement.

Far From The Madding Crowd is based in an attractive Georgian building in the heart of Linlithgow High Street and over two floors we sell a huge range of adult and children's books, specialising in Scottish books. Throughout the year, we run a varied programme of events including two festivals - one for the general public and one for local schools in the area. We made full use of the generosity of the James Patterson grants to create a special story-telling hub and we also have a rabbit, BB, and a couple of guinea pigs who live out the back and make story-telling sessions a lot more fun!
