The Bookseller 150 of 2021

The Bookseller has published its list of the 150 (formerly 100) most influential people in UK publishing. The list (which has appeared every year since 2009) is made up of publishers, retailers, authors, trade bodies and more. Those on the list with a Scottish connection are:

  • Jamie Byng (CEO, Canongate Books)
  • Nick Barley (Director, Edinburgh International Book Festival)
  • Matt Haig (author published by Canongate)
  • JK Rowling (author based in Scotland)
  • Meryl Halls (MD, Booksellers Association)
  • Marion Sinclair (Chief Executive, Publishing Scotland)

The Bookseller also named author Bernardine Evaristo as the 151st – the person in the industry they think has stood out just a little bit more than the others.

In the accompanying editorial, Tom Tivnan of The Bookseller mentions that 40% of the list are either new entries or first appeared in 2020. He goes on to say that a lot of the new names are those who are also involved in expanding the books market and reaching out to previously under-served communities, like Moon Lane’s Tamara Macfarlane, Lit in Colour’s Zaahida Nabagereka, TikTokker Abby Parker and Crystal Mahey-Morgan, founder of OWN IT! See Tom Tivnan in The Bookseller 17 December 2021.
