Online book retailer Book Depository is to close on 26 April 2023. Originally set up by ex-Amazon employees in 2004, it was bought by Amazon in 2011. It is part of a raft of redundancies and closures that Amazon is implementing to reduce costs. When The Bookseller asked about the reasons for the Book Depository closure, it was referred to Amazon’s statement in January 2023.
Customers of Book Depository are lamenting the closure as it provided free delivery worldwide to more than 120 countries from fulfilment centres in the UK and Australia.
