Overview

BIC Brunches are a series of live webinars which have been created for BIC members and non-members to attend to discuss book industry supply chain topics (including issues, successes and challenges). Each BIC Brunch session is dedicated to one key area of the supply chain, offering attendees a unique opportunity to gather knowledge about that topic from experts in the field.

BIC Brunch: Rights – A Key Part of the Publishing Value Chain

It might be argued that everything the book industry does ultimately stems from rights, or the permission to sell or license. This BIC Brunch, kindly sponsored by FADEL, will focus on the basics and definitions of rights management. What do we means by rights? What different types of rights exist in the book/content eco-system? What impact do they have on the supply chain, and on maximising sales and new streams of revenue? And how do organisations, or individuals even know the right permissions are in place?

In this session we’ll cover a variety of topics as follows:

  • What are rights?
  • Common terminology
  • How authors’ deals/contracts are key to creating a rights inventory for optimal business operation
  • The importance of ensuring all rights for different (i.e., from different sources/authors/creators) content in your products align.
  • How well understood and managed rights are a valuable asset to a publishing organisation.
  • How rights impact the publishing ecosystem – we’ll look at the different types of rights transactions.
  • How book industry standards can help.

The Host:

Karina Urquhart, Executive Director, BIC

Speakers:

  • Paul Gore, EVP and GM of Professional Services, FADEL
  • Amy Joyner, Director of Rights and Licensing at Kogan Page and former founder and Chair of the PLS Rights Management Group
  • One more speaker TBC

Who should attend?

This BIC Brunch session will be of interest to anyone in the book industry involved in assigning rights, recording and managing rights in systems, selling rights, acquiring rights, royalties payment/reporting, and so on.
