Saltire Society Publishers of the Year 2019

Many congratulations to the Saltire Society Publisher of the Year winners 2019. Sandstone Press won Scottish Publisher of the Year, and Saltire Society Emerging Publisher of the Year Award, presented in partnership with Publishing Scotland, was awarded jointly to Kay Farrell of Sandstone Press and Alan Windram of Little Door Books. 404 Ink and Jamie Norman of Canongate Books were Highly Commended in these two categories.

In partnership with Publishing Scotland, this year's Saltire Society Publisher of the Year shortlisted publishers were:

  • 404 Ink - (HIGHLY COMMENDED) Shortlisted in the Saltire Publisher of the Year Award category in 2017, 404 Ink is an award-winning alternative, independent publisher of books and literary magazines. 404 Ink v they publish.
  • BHP Comics - BHP Comics is Scotland's leading comics and graphic novel publisher and was shortlisted in the Saltire Publisher of the Year Award category in 2017. It champions new, exciting and diverse creator-owned, comics, graphic novels and art books that cover a wide range of topics and themes.
  • Canongate Books - Established in 1973, Canongate Books has emerged as one of the most dynamic publishing houses in Britain. With an international outlook, it continues to nurture and publish new talent from around the world, whilst retaining the essence of the Scottish Canon. It was shortlisted in the Saltire Publisher of the Year Award category in 2017.
  • Charco Press - Charco Press is an ambitious award-winning publisher founded by Samuel McDowell and Carolina Orloff (winner of the Saltire Society Emerging Publisher of the Year 2018). Publishing some of the most significant names in Latin American literature, and bringing these new and exciting voices to the UK, Charco Press aims to change the current literary scene, introducing a new wave of talented contemporary writers.
  • Sandstone Press - (WINNER) Winner of the Saltire Society Publisher of the Year 2014, Highland based Sandstone Press is an independent award-winning publisher with an international outlook, producing inspiring books by innovative authors.

 

The Saltire Society Emerging Publisher of the Year was established in 2016 and supported by Publishing Scotland, this award aims to recognise the work of an individual in the early stages of their publishing career, with the winner receiving a prize of £500. The publishers shortlisted in 2019 were:

  • Pauline Cuchet, Canongate Books
  • Anne Glennie, Cranachan
  • Kay Farrell, Sandstone Press (JOINT WINNER)
  • Jamie Norman, Canongate Books (HIGHLY COMMENDED)
  • Richard Wainman, Floris Books
  • Alan Windram, Little Door Books (JOINT WINNER)
